Film and Audiovisual Law Conference

The conference will focus on Film and Audiovisual Law, a keystone proficiency for a sustainable evolution in the film industry still severely under-discussed.

As a constantly evolving subject, Law for Film and Audiovisual is continuously adapting to the legislative technological and social evolution in this industry. Therefore, it is vital to have the most up-to-date knowledge available, as well as a space to discuss it.

The conference is intended for students and professionals on Film and Law, or people interested in the area. Lawyers, law students, paralegals, jurists, magistrates and academics, producers, public and private financiers, directors, and film students, are welcome.

The purpose is to analyze the new tendencies in Law in Film and Audiovisual and tackle the absence of conferences that address this issue on a European level.

Additionally, the conference strongly encourages networking and the Building of Dynamics between producers, lawyers specialized in law of Film and Audiovisual, and other agents present at the event.

Speakers

Kami Naghdi

Kami Naghdi heads the Film and Television practice at Clintons. His work spans media finance, development, production and exploitation of film and television content across all platforms, with a broad international client base. He is best known for handling multi-party financing transactions, complex rights deals, life rights and documentaries. He is praised by clients for his dynamic, vigorous approach to high-pressure closings. He is listed by the Legal 500 as a leading individual in film and television. Clients say he is “knowledgeable, thorough and fast”, “very experienced” and “an extraordinarily talented and knowledgeable practitioner with supremely effective legal and commercial nuance”.

Regular visiting lecturer to film MA courses and has provided expert evidence in complex film finance cases. His articles have been published by the Entertainment Law Review and Lexis. Most recently he has provided evidence for the House of Lords Communications Committee in relation to ‘Public Service Broadcasting in the age of video on demand’.Educated at University College London; City, University of London; City Law School. From 2005 – 2010 Kami worked in the film industry and produced eight international feature films with leading cast and film-makers

Rusta Mizani

Graduated in Business Administration, worked in marketing at various film distribution companies (including PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, Universal Pictures, Tobis StudioCanal). He followed this up with positions at Universal Music and McKinsey and even made a brief excursion into the grubby charm of Berlin’s arty underground with his own bar in the capital.

Rusta successfully completed the Atelier/Masterclass Ludwigsburg-Paris and then worked as a freelance producer and as Head of Production/Finance at Coproduction Office in Berlin, Paris and Copenhagen. He was Head of Contract Management and Administration at the Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein and most recently Head of Business Affairs at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB).

Andreas Pense

Andreas Pense is a lawyer and partner at Unverzagt, in the Copyright and Media Law department. He has a master’s degree in Law and Economics International Trade, was a research associate at the Max-Planck Institute for foreign and international private law in Hamburg, and earned a doctorate in the field of corporate and comparative law. He is a member of Deutsche Filmakademie and German-French Film Meetings.

He does comprehensive advice on national and international film projects and TV series in all matters relating to rights clearance, development, structuring, financing, insurance, production, and exploitation. Recent work includes legal services in the movie The King’s Daughter and Stowaway and legal counsel in Without Remorse and A Hidden Life. As external legal advisor advised in the documentaries Sea of Shadows and The Ivory Game.

Gareth Wiley

With a successful background in the London’s, New York’s and Hong Kong’s stock exchanges, Gareth Wiley has quickly left a mark in the contemporary film business by his now long collaboration with American film legend Woody Allen, having produced the first films of the strain of European-located productions that revived Allen’s career, with commercial and critical successes such as Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), for which he was awarded a Golden Globe; Scoop (2006) and Match Point (2005).

Recently, Gareth has also spent a great deal of time working alongside one of Britain’s most talented upcoming filmmakers: David Leon, in films such as Orthodox (2015) and the recently announced Driven. Gareth has also worked with documentary film star Alex Gibney in Magic Trip: Ken Kesey´s search for a kool place (2011).
Alongside his production work, he has spent years developing Screen Advantage, an online production tool created to assist producers in the financing phase of film projects. This tool has proven to be incredibly useful for independent filmmakers who often find the financing stage difficult to grasp.

Nastasja Borgeot

After working for Sotheby’s and an art investment fund, Nastasja co-founded, the Artmonist, an art trading and artist management company at the age of 19, which she sold shortly after graduating from King’s College London. She then gained commercial law experience working as an intern at DDG, a leading French Intellectual Property and digital law firm and then Kellerhals Carrard, one of Switzerland’s largest law firms, including working for global leaders in the fashion, arts, and sports industries.

Nastasja currently works in Clintons’ Film & TV and Digital Media departments. Her interest for and knowledge of digital arts and immersive entertainment is reflected in her practice, as she advises clients from all sectors on their digital transitions. Fluent French, Conversational Italian and Spanish, Basic Mandarin.

Location

Espinho is a beach town on the Atlantic coastline which is part of the Greater Metropolitan Area of ​​Porto and just 19km away from the center of Oporto and 30 minutes from Porto Airport.

With 8 km of coastline, the city is famous for its beautiful beaches, which are excellent for swimming and sunbathing, but that have also established themselves as one of the best places in Europe for surfing and bodyboarding. It is also well known for its centennial market, happening every Monday in the heart of the city.

Getting There

By Plane

Espinho is easily accessible by plane, being just a 30-minute car drive away from the Airport of Oporto, which is the preferred airport. 

If you chose to arrive at Lisbon Airport, this is about 300km away from Espinho and you will need to catch a train, which will take about 3 hours.

From downtown Porto

Espinho is part of the Greater Metropolitan Area of ​​Porto. From any part of the city of Porto, it is easy to reach the different train stations that allow the connection to Espinho. It takes about 30 minutes from Downtown Porto to Espinho, both by train or car.

From Lisbon

The train station of Espinho is also served by the main railway line of Portugal and its various connections. With prices starting at 23€, the trip from Lisbon to Espinho takes 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Organization

The Film and Audiovisual Law Conference is organized by FEST – Associação Cultural.

FEST – AC has been organizing events of excellence for 16 years, most notably the annual FEST – New Directors | New Films Festival, a well-established and recognized Film Festival that takes place in the last week of June in the seaside town of Espinho in northern Portugal, and is today one of the largest of its kind in the country. The event is one of Portugal’s most international forums, attracting participants from all over the world.

Spread throughout the year, FEST – Associação Cultural also organizes FEST FILM LAB, a series of workshops with top industry professionals eager to share their experience with up to 25 participants, and in a series of locations all over the world, like New York, Dubai, Amsterdam, London, and Lisbon.

FEST – AC is also responsible for the organization of FEST – Cineclube de Espinho, a year-long series of film screenings, that aim at developing access to independent filmmaking in the region, and is today a central fixture in the cultural and social life of Espinho.

In the past, the organization has been responsible for large international events and projects such as Bright Young Screens (Event Organization Forum), Borderline (itinerary production project organized in the framework of Guimarães 2012 – European Capital of Culture), among many other events.
